NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State New Kensington men's soccer team will host a quarterfinal match against Penn State Mont Alto in the PSUAC playoffs on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 3:30 p.m. New Kensington finished the season 11-4 and 8-2 in the conference. New Kensington finished with the 3rd seed for this year's playoffs. Mont Alto finished 8-10 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
Many New Kensington players finished in the top five in the PSUAC statistical rankings. Freshman Jacob Guerrini (Lower Burrell, Pa. / Burrell) leads the team in goals with 20 this season, which ranked him third in the conference. Fellow freshman Jordan Cooper (Fairfax, Pa. / Robinson) finished the regular season with 14 goals, which has him ranked fifth.
Guerrini, Cooper, and Austin Arnold (Washington, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) finished in the top five in points. Guerrini is ranked third with 46 total points. Cooper is ranked fourth with 35 total points. Arnold finished with 30 total points and is ranked fifth.
Throughout the year, New Kensington used freshman Pablo Rea (Tustin, Calif. / Santa Ana) and AJ Collins (Penn Hills, Pa. / Penn Hills) for goalkeeper. Rea played in all 15 games for the Lions, while Collins played in eight, as he was also used as an attacker. Rea finished the regular season with 52 saves.
The two teams matched up earlier in the month with New Kensington coming away with the victory. Cooper scored both goals in the 2-0 victory over Mont Alto on Saturday, Oct. 2. Rea and Collins combined for four saves.
The other quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday, October 27th, is #5 Penn State Greater Allegheny at #4 Penn State Beaver. #1 Penn State Brandywine and #2 Penn State Lehigh Valley both received a first-round bye. The semifinals will be played on Saturday, October 30th. The winners of the semifinal matchups with play on Wednesday, November 3rd, at University Park for the championship.
