Turnovers prove costly for New Ken women

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. - Penn State New Kensington women played competitively for most of the first half against Penn State Fayette on Tuesday, but New Ken's turnovers proved too much to overcome in an 83-48 defeat. New Kensington committed 38 turnovers, while Fayette turned the ball over just 10 times.

With the setback, New Kensington drops to 0-9 overall, including 0-6 in the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC). Fayette, meanwhile, improves to 5-4 overall, and 4-2 in PSUAC action.

Fayette held a narrow 14-10 edge after the first quarter, as Deshaya Chavis (Penn Hills, Pa/Penn Hills) and Ryleigh Beck (Saegertown, Pa/Maplewood) each scored four points for New Kensington.

While Chavis continued to produce in the second quarter, Fayette began to apply pressure defense, which yielded a dozen turnovers in the stanza. Fayette's duo of Taylor McCormick and Alison Boykin took advantage, as they combined to score 15 points, helping to stake Fayette to a 36-24 halftime edge.

Although Beck and Shaylynne Boitnott (Meadville, Pa/Meadville) provided a scoring punch for New Kensington in the second half, host New Ken could not slow down Fayette, which scored 47 points after the intermission.

Beck led New Kensington with 15 points, and she added six rebounds. Additionally, Chavis produced 14 points and a game-high nine assists, Boitnott chipped in with 13 points and two blocks, and Alexa Marasco (Natrona Heights, Pa/Highlands) added four points and a team-best seven rebounds. Collectively, New Kensington shot an impressive 56.4 percent from the field.

McCormick led Fayette with 27 points, eight assists, and seven steals, while Boykin totaled 23 points and nine boards. Morgan Rigsby posted a double-double, with 10 points and 17 rebounds, along with seven steals.

New Kensington returns to action on Friday, Dec. 10, traveling to play Penn State Hazleton.
