New Kensington Drops 7-3 Decision in Series Opener

TARENTUM, Pa. - New Kensington baseball dropped a 7-3 decision to Penn State Beaver Friday afternoon in their final conference series of the season. 

Penn State Beaver got ahead first following two scoreless innings. Beaver ran across four times in the third. They held New Kensington for three innings before a huge fourth inning brought the men within one, trailing 4-3. Beaver would extend their lead by one run in the seventh, adding two more runs in the eighth. New Kensington could score in the final frame and fell to Penn State Beaver 7-3.

Nick Osborne (Hermitage, Pa. / Hickory) got the start on the mound for New Kensington, throwing five innings and letting up four runs on nine hits, striking out one. He was replaced by Jake Wilson (Fort Myers, Fla. / Fort Myers) who threw four innings giving up three runs on seven hits, striking out one. 

Penn State Beaver scored the first runs of the game off of a double to right field for the 2 RBI. This was soon followed by a sacrifice fly for another run. Beaver would single to center field to close out the frame leading 4-0. 

New Kensington responded on a Max Oliveri (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Penn Hills) double in the bottom of the fourth for the 3 RBI that contributed all of New Kensington's runs for the game. He brought in Tallon Auth (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Plum), Jake Wilson, and Reise Matson (​​Kittanning, Pa. / Armstrong). 

The game was scoreless until the top of the seventh when Penn State Beaver reached on a fielder's choice for an RBI. Beaver then singled to shortstop to bring in another run. The final run of the game came on a Penn State Beaver grounder to third base to extend the lead to 7-3 and finish with the win. 

"We have a good approach," said Tallon Auth. "It's just we need a timely hit here and there and we're just not getting the lucky break right now."

New Kensington will close out conference action tomorrow when they conclude their series with Penn State Beaver on the road. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
