Women's Volleyball Downs Penn State Greater Allegheny

McKeesport, Pa. - The Penn State New Kensington women's volleyball team defeated Penn State Greater Allegheny Wednesday night at Wunderly Gymnasium. New Kensington improves its record to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference. 

The two teams battled through the first set with Penn State Greater Allegheny serving for set point, leading 24-21. New Kensington rallied, scoring five straight points to take the first set 26-24. Freshman Brittany Kotvas and sophomore Gina Batiz each contributed three kills in the set. The second set also needed extra points to determine a winner with Greater Allegheny evening the match score at one with a 27-25 set victory. 

New Kensington cruised in set three with Kotvas again racking up three kills en route to a 25-12 win. Greater Allegheny fought back in the fourth and final set before falling 25-20. 

Outsider hitters Janet Surma and Kotvas led the offense with eight kills a piece. Batiz and Kaylea Flick were the catalysts, providing 15 and 14 assists, respectively. Flick also registered four aces and two blocks. Fellow freshman Kasey Klapheke and Batiz led the match with nine digs each.

New Kensington is on the road this weekend, playing quad matches at Penn State Mont Alto and Penn State Brandywine. On Saturday, they will face Penn State York at 2:00 p.m. and Penn State Mont Alto at 6:00 pm. Sunday they come up against Penn State Schuylkill at 12:00 p.m. followed by Penn State Brandywine at 2:00 p.m.
