Close second half couldn’t make up for first half deficit

MONT ALTO, Pa. – With no lead changes occurring throughout Tuesday's women's basketball competition, New Kensington was unable to pass up Mont Alto's numbers. Mont Alto secured the win at home, while New Kensington trailed 62-43.

Facing this upset, New Kensington will move to 1-14 in the PSUAC and 2-20 overall, meanwhile Mont Alto will improve to 5-10 in conference play and 8-12 overall.

Mont Alto began the scoring in the first quarter and continued to go on an eight-point run. New Kensington managed to put up numbers after Beaver's run, landing 3 of 13 field goals. Beaver connected on seven shots, and ended the quarter in front 14-7.

Another eight-point run secured a 22-7 lead for Beaver at 5:14 in the second frame. Deshaya Chavis (Penn Hills, Pa./ Penn Hills) was able to post four points for New Kensington to improve the deficit it faced. Putting in two from behind the arc, Beaver kept up its dominance at the end of the half with a 27-14 advantage.

New Kensington hit double digits during the third, with Chavis paving the way with six points. Beaver only put in two more field goals than New Kensington, but once again its three-point attempts put it over the edge. New Kensington was still down 48-29 with one quarter remaining.

Tying 14-14 in the last 10 minutes of play, New Kensington couldn't overcome Beaver's score. At 7:06, Beaver hit its largest lead of the game, 58-29, when Madison Bishop landed a three-pointer. Bishop paced Beaver with 10 points, while putting in all of Beaver's field goals.

Chavis compiled 14 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Ryliegh Beck (Saegertown, Pa./ Maplewood) put up 13 points and took nine rebounds. Leading with 12 rebounds, Auveonna Perkins (Arnold, Pa./ Valley) also led with two assists and scored five points.

Bishop was Beaver's big scorer with 23 points and tied for the most rebounds, 10, with Mariah Martin. Grace Banfe also reached double digits, scoring 11 points, and Kara Newell, who landed 10, led with seven assists.

New Kensington will go head to head with Penn State Dubois on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m. Mont Alto will stay home for its next contest on Saturday against Penn State Wilkes-Barre at 1 p.m.
