New Kensington Comes Up Short in Women’s Basketball

MCKEESPORT, Pa. – In this afternoon's women's basketball game against Penn State Greater Allegheny, Penn State New Kensington came up short, 87-32.

In the first quarter, Becca Wilhelm (Leechburg, Pa./ Leechburg) hit a three-pointer and had three rebounds. Hannah Berry (Leechburg, Pa./ Leechburg) and Alyssa Slancauskas (Lower Burrell, Pa./ Cheswick Christian) both put in a free throw. Greater Allegheny pulled ahead 27-5 at the end of the first.

Calle Zmenkowski (Cheswick, Pa./ Fox Chapel) started the Lions off with a jump shot in the second quarter. Zmenkowski contributed four points and a steal. Erika Finn (New Kensington, Pa./ Burrell) led with rebounds, five, and made two points. Once again, Wilhelm had three. With Greater Allegheny still out front at the bottom of the second quarter, the score then read 49-18.

It took New Kensington a while to start scoring in the third quarter, but then Adda McCormick (Sarver, Pa./ Freeport) was able to put in a free throw. Finn added four points, and Berry had four rebounds. The score was then 64-23 when the fourth quarter began. Wilhem led with eight points, two of which were from the three-point line.

Just like in the fourth quarter, Wilhelm led the Lions with 14 points. Berry led in rebounds, nine, and Finn had seven.

The women's team will play at home on Tuesday, Feb. 12 against Penn State Mont Alto at 6 p.m.
