Less converted shots give rise to upset

MCKEESPORT, Pa. – New Kensington men's basketball converted 11% less field goals than Greater Allegheny, which caused it to be outscored in both halves, leading to a PSUAC loss, 82-69, on Tuesday.

This upset will set New Kensington back to 2-10 in the conference and 3-15 overall, while Greater Allegheny improves to 8-4 in conference play and 12-6 overall.

After the first half, New Kensington faced a 36-26 difference, with Greater Allegheny ahead. New Kensington boosted its play in the next half, improving its scoring to 43, although the home team still managed to pull in front with 46 of its own.  

New Kensington attempted 70 field goals throughout the entire contest, only connecting on 21. Greater Allegheny was able to put in 32 of 78. New Kensington outdid Greater Allegheny will free throws, going 20 for 24, while the opponent hit 10 of 19.

Jamison Nee (Natrona Heights, Pa./ Highlands) landed a majority of New Kensington's shots from the line (10-11). Jahi Ogbonna (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Allderdice) was able to go 4-4.

Nee ended the contest as New Kensington's leading scorer with 22 points and two assists. Ogbonna followed with 15 points, five rebounds and two assists, and Tavarski Wardlow (Round Rock, Tex./ Hendrickson) tied for most assists, two.

Leading for Greater Allegheny, Makis Rivera sunk 22 points and had 10 rebounds, along with Joe Charlton. Koran Fleming paced with 17 points, and Markel Sayles contributed 12. Sayles and Marquest Rainey added five assists each.

New Kensington will host Penn State Shenango on Saturday at 3 p.m., and Greater Allegheny will head to Penn State Dubois for a 3 p.m. contest on Saturday as well.
