A monster performance from junior Keith Corbett (Silver Springs, Md/Methodist University) was not enough for Penn State New Kensington, as the Lions fell 97-76 at home to Penn State Fayette on Friday. With the setback, the ninth straight defeat for PSU New Kensington, the team's record stands at 4-15 overall, and 2-12 in Penn State University Athletic Conference play.
Corbett, playing in his 10th game of the season, produced his finest effort, as he netted a season-best 32 points, as well as 14 rebounds and five steals, all of which were game-high totals.
New Kensington was unable to find the mark offensively in the first half, however, shooting just 30 percent from the field and 2-11 from behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes. As a result, the home squad faced a 14-point halftime deficit.
In the second half, New Kensington shot much better, and pulled within seven points less than three minutes into the frame on an Antonio Hill (West Mifflin, Pa/West Mifflin) basket. PSU Fayette quickly regained command of the game, however, as it mounted a 19-3 run in response. New Kensington was never able to seriously threaten over the final 10 minutes, as Fayette sealed the victory to improve to 10-12 overall, and 7-7 in PSUAC action.
The teams finished the contest with nearly identical percentages from the field, but Fayette was much more effective from three-point distance, shooting 14-38, while New Kensington was just 5-19. Additionally, Fayette won the rebounding battle, and also garnered assists on 25 of its 31 baskets.
Aside from Corbett's double-double effort, three other New Kensington players reached double figures in scoring. Senior Dorian Broadwater (Homestead, Pa/Steel Valley) netted 17 points, Hill contributed 13 points, six rebounds and four assists, and Juwan Willis (Swissvale, Pa/Woodland Hills) chipped in a dozen points and four assists. The bench failed to produce any points for the home team.
Penn State Fayette also featured four players in double figures, led by London Hoxie, who tallied 31 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Marvin Sidon contributed 21 points and a game-high nine assists, Tavian Mozie netted 17 points, and Atrayo Matthews added 10 points and eight assists.
Penn State New Kensington wraps up its home slate tomorrow, when the Lions host Penn State Hazelton at 1 p.m. Penn State Fayette, meanwhile, returns home tomorrow to host DuBois at 3 p.m.
