New Kensington Volleyball Puts up Fight Against York

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – During day two of the PSUAC crossover weekend, Penn State New Kensington women's volleyball went 1-1 against Penn State Scranton and Penn State York.

New Kensington started off their morning with a win after playing Scranton. The first set came to 25-18, and New Kensington made sure Scranton didn't get more points than that during the next two sets. The Lions grew stronger throughout each set, eventually leading to their victories of 25-17 and 25-15.

Putting down 15 kills, Kaylea Flick (Murrysville, Pa./ Franklin Regional) advanced New Kensington's offense. Janet Surma (Lower Burrell, Pa./ Burrell) led with nine digs, and Lindsey Hessom (Leechburg, Pa./ Kiski Area) reached 30 assists.

New Kensington then faced off with York at noon. It was their strongest game of the season so far, and the Lions pushed all of their limits. After losing the first set 25-14, New Kensington regrouped and pulled off a 26-24 win for the second set. Tied with one set a piece, New Kensington gained a huge lead on York in the next set, which eventually led to their 25-15 win.

With only one set left to end the day undefeated, New Kensington pushed all boundaries the fourth set, but York stayed right on them. York then broke away to a 21-14 lead, leaving New Kensington fighting for a win. The women gained back five points, making the score 21-19. Towards the end of the game, the teams were tied 24-24, both trying to win by two. In the end, York got their first, 26-24. Heading into game five, it was winner take all. It was a close game, but York left University Park with the victory over New Kensington, 15-12.

Although faced with loss, New Kensington put up a fight. Bethany Baney (Apollo, Pa./ Kiski Area) controlled the defense with 26 digs. Flick led with 25 kills, and Surma ended with 17. Once again, Hessom managed to post a large number of assists, 42.

New Kensington finished the weekend 2-2.

They will have their home opener on Tues. October 1 against Penn State Mont Alto. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
