Flick has 16 Kills as New Kensington Downs WCCC, 3-0

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. - Outside hitter Kaylea Flick (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) tallied 16 kills in 3-0 victory over Westmoreland County Community College. The win brings Penn State New Kensington to an overall record of 6-8, while WCCC falls to 3-13.

Despite seven kills from Flick, the Lions struggled to put WCCC away in set one. After being down set point, 24-23, New Kensington rallied off three straight points and took the set on a kill from Janet Surma (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell). The Lions scored the first seven points of the second stanza, setting the tone for the rest of the match.  The team recorded 14 kills and a .364 hitting percentage in the set, winning easily, 25-10. Early in the third frame, the teams were tied at 8-8, but nine straight points off the serve of senior Cora Rejniak (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) gave the Lions a stron lead. New Kensington held on to win the set 25-17.

Freshman Erin Tumas (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Ara) had a team-high eleven digs, while junior setter Lindsey Hessom (Leechburg, Pa./Kiski Area) had 31 assists, her highest of the season in a three-set match. Surma finished the match with eight kills and eight digs, while fellow sophomore Brittany Kotvas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) had seven kills and three blocks. Rejniak and Flick each posted seven digs a piece.

The Lions will take the weekend off and return to their home court on Tuesday, Oct. 9 to host Penn State DuBois. The first serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
