Hazleton Downs New Kensington in Women’s Basketball

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. – Penn State Hazleton downed Penn State New Kensington, 70-34, in a women's basketball matchup.

Erika Finn (New Kensington, Pa./ Burrell) started the Lions off with the lead against Hazleton by putting up a layup. Finn scored four points during the first quarter and had eight rebounds. Alyssa Slancauskas (Lower Burrell, Pa./ Cheswick Christian) made a jump shot for two and added four rebounds. The quarter ended with Hazleton ahead 13-9. Becca Wilhelm (Leechburg, Pa./ Leechburg) led the Lions during the second quarter, scoring three. Calle Zmenkowski (Cheswick, Pa./ Fox Chapel) and Brittney Wolford (Lower Burrell, Pa./ Burrell) both put up two points. Wolford had the most rebounds, five. At halftime, New Kensington was down 28-16.

Two jump shots were made by Finn during the third quarter, landing her four points. Finn grabbed five rebounds during the quarter, and Wilhelm put in a three-pointer. New Kensington was then down 48-25 when the fourth quarter began. Adda McCormick (Sarver, Pa./ Freeport) made a layup for the Lions after tipoff, and Finn put in six points.

Finn contributed big for the Lions, tallying up 14 point, and led both teams with 17 rebounds. Wilhelm produced eight points, while Hannah Berry (Leechburg, Pa./ Leechburg) had four.

The women's team will faceoff with Penn State Fayette on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. The game will take place at New Kensington.
