Women's Basketball Takes On First Game of the Season

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. – Penn State New Kensington's women's basketball team faced off with Penn State Greater Allegheny in their first game of the season. New Kensington was unable to get a win for their first game, 87-22. 

Sarah Heavner (New Kensington, Pa./ Kiski) scored the first points for the team a minute after the first quarter began. The Lions spent the rest of the quarter aggressively playing defense. Erika Finn (New Kensington, Pa./ Burrell) grabbed four rebounds and Hannah Berry (Leechburg Pa./ Leechburg) had two. The first quarter ended with Greater Allegheny up 22-2. New Kensington picked up the pace for the second quarter with two players scoring this time. Finn put up four points and Calle Zmenkowski (Cheswick, Pa./ Fox Chapel) made a jump shot for two. During the quarter, Brittney Wolford (Lower Burrell, Pa./ Burrell) led the team in rebounds, four. At halftime, New Kensington was down 43-8.

Once again, in the third quarter, Finn scored four points and Zmenkowski scored two. Becca Wilhelm (Leechburg, Pa./ Leecburg) was also able to add to the score with one free throw. Finn excelled in the fourth quarter and carried the team with six points and two rebounds.

For the Lions' first game, Finn led the team with a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds. Zmenkowski knocked in four points and got four rebounds.  

Penn State New Kensington will travel to Penn State Fayette for their first road game of the season on Wednesday, Jan. 23. The game is set to take place at 6 p.m.
