New Kensington Softball Faces Loss in Two Games

LEMONT FURNACE, Pa. – Penn State New Kensington softball fell short to Penn State Fayette in a doubleheader, 13-5 and 12-3.

The first inning of the first game started off fast for Fayette. They ran in five, already taking the lead. Fayette scored again in the next inning, which made the score 6-0.

In the top of the third, New Kensington started getting hits. Abigail Michelucci (Canonsburg, Pa.) singled to center field and advanced to second. Calle Zmenkowski (Cheswick, Pa.) was up to bat next and singled. Erika Finn (Upper Burrell, Pa.) did the same, and Michelucci scored. Zmenkowski scored as well after Lauren Torgent (Brackenridge, Pa.) singled a line drive to center field.

New Kensington kept the scoring going in the fourth inning. Nicole Skokowski (Oil City, Pa.) made her way to first base and scored when Teresa DeSimone (Spring Church, Pa.) bunted. Michelucci and Zmenkowski both doubled back to back, and DeSimone scored. New Kensington was only down by one, 6-5, after facing their third out.

Fayette pushed up their lead by two after scoring in the bottom of the fourth. They did the same in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five.

Along with doubling, Zmenkowski had two RBIs and struck out two while pitching for five innings. Finn and Torgent both had one.

In the second game, New Kensington was first to score. During the top of the first, Michelucci doubled to left field. Zmenkowski also doubled and Michelucci scored. Beaver then went on to score two.

The score stayed 2-1 until both teams starting scoring again in the third inning. Facing two outs, Zmenkowski reached first base. Finn singled to left field, and Torgent doubled, which brought in Zmenkowski and Finn for the score. Fayette brought in seven runs after getting New Kensington out and made the score 9-3.

Fayette scored three more in the fourth inning, and with a last chance to score against Fayette, New Kensington was only able to get one hit from DeSimone who singled a line drive to left field.

Michelucci, Zmenkowski, and Torgent all doubled throughout the game. Torgent also had two RBIs.

New Kensington will finish playing Fayette for the season on Mon., April 5. Game times are 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
