Softball Struggles in Doubleheader Against Beaver

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. – In a double header against Penn State Beaver, Penn State New Kensington lost 10-0 and 10-1.

During the first game, neither teams were able to score in the first inning. New Kensington did get one hit though by Calle Zmenkowski (Cheswick, Pa.) who singled. In the top of the second, Beaver ran in two, and in the third inning, ran in five. Beaver was up 7-0 at the bottom of the third.

Beaver scored another three runs during the top of the fourth, and Erika Finn (Upper Burrell, Pa.) singled to right field to try and score for New Kensington. She was left on base. The score read 10-0 heading into the fifth inning, which completed scoring for the game.

The second game went a little bit better than the first for the Lions. In the bottom of the first, Abigail Michelucci (Canonsburg, Pa.) doubled, but no scores were run in. Within the next two innings, Beaver scored 4, and New Kensington remained with no runs.

In the bottom of the fourth, Zmenkowski singled and was left on base. The score was then 7-0 going into the fifth.

New Kensington was finally able to score in the last inning, right after Beaver brought in three runs. Brittney Wolford (Lower Burrell, Pa.) singled to center field, advanced to second, and scored with a double from Michelucci.

Michelucci doubled and had one RBI throughout the game. Zmenkowski pitched for 5.1 innings and struck out two.

New Kensington will play on Wed., April 10 against Kent St-Tuscarawas. The games will take place at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
