Greater Allegheny Takes Two from New Kensington in Softball

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. – Penn State New Kensington fell in a double header to Penn State Greater Allegheny Friday afternoon. Greater Allegheny won by scores of 10-6 and 12-1. New Kensington drops to 1-17 overall and 1-11 in the PSUAC, while Greater Allegheny improves to 13-8, 11-5 PSUAC.

In game one, Greater Allegheny took an 8-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning, when New Kensington put three runs on the board. Junior Brittney Wolford (Lower Burrell, Pa.) started things off with a double to left center. Sophomore Morgan Williams (East Berlin, Pa.) struck a double of her own to trade places with Wolford and pick up the RBI. Erika Finn (New Kensington, Pa.) dropped a single into left field, advancing Williams to third. Rebecca Wilhelm (Leechburg, Pa.) pushed Williams across the plate, and Finn scored on an error by Greater Allegheny to put the score at 8-3.

Greater Allegheny scored a run each in the fifth and sixth innings to go up 10-3.  New Kensington tried to put a comeback together in its last at bat. Three singles in a row by Kaylea Flick (Murrysville, Pa.), Brittany Kotvas (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and Gina Batiz (Vandergrift, Pa.) loaded the bases to begin the inning. Flick scored on a Greater Allegheny error before Williams roped a double to left field, scoring two runners. Greater Allegheny held on for the next two outs to end the game with a final score of 10-6.

Greater Allegheny got a good jump in the second game as well, scoring twelve unanswered runs through four and a half innings. New Kensington's lone run came in its last time up. Wilhelm started the inning with a double, followed by a double from Flick that sent Wilhelm home. That would be all from New Kensington, as the game ended 12-1 in favor of Greater Allegheny.,

For the day, Williams had two hits and three runs batted in for New Kensington, while Flick finished with two hits and two RBI.

New Kensington will face Greater Allegheny again Saturday at Arconic Field in New Kensington. The double header is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
