New Kensington Falls to Mont Alto in Softball Double header

MONT ALTO, Pa. - Penn State New Kensington opened up PSUAC play today at Penn State Mont Alto, falling to the hosts by scores of 12-4 and 9-1. New Kensington falls to 0-8 overall, while Mont Alto improves to 4-0. 

In the first game, New Kensington started strong in the top of the first with Rebecca Wilhelm (Leechburg, Pa.) walking and then advancing to second on a fielder's choice. Sophomore Morgan Williams (East Berlin, Pa.) followed with a single to right field. Wilhelm then scored on a ground out by junior Erika Finn (New Kensington, Pa.). Freshman Lauren Torgent (Brackenridge, Pa.) then connected on her first collegiate home run, bringing home Williams and giving New Kensington a 3-0 lead. Mont Alto scored seven runs over the next two innings before Williams led off the top of the third inning with her second home run of the season. Mont Alto responded with five more runs and took the game 12-4. Williams was a perfect 3-for-3 for New Kensington.

New Kensington's lone run in the second game came in the fourth inning when freshman Kaylea Flick (Murrysville, Pa.) struck a two-out single, the first hit of her collegiate career. Junior Alyssa Slancauskas (Lower Burrell, Pa.) followed with an RBI double to score Flick. Sophomore Gina Batiz (Vandergrift, Pa.) also tallied her first collegiate hit during the 9-1 loss. 

New Kensington will face Mont Alto again in its home opener on Monday, Apr. 2. The double header is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Arconic Field.
