Williams Leads New Kensington Softball on Final Day in Florida

KISSIMMEE, FLa. - Sophomore Morgan Williams (East Berlin, Pa.) led the Penn State New Kensington softball team as they dropped two games on their final day at the Diamond 9 Sunkissed Games. In a 11-0 loss to Bridgewater College, Williams had the sole hit for the Nittany Lions. Against Heidelberg University, she blasted a two-run home run to bring in the first runs of the season, but the team fell short 12-4. New Kensingtons record drops to 0-6 overall.

Against Heidelberg, junior Rebecca Wilhelm (Leechburg, Pa.) started the top of the first off with a single up the middle. Williams then hit a homer that put New Kensington up 2-0. Heidelberg added three runs over the next two innings to take the lead 3-2. However, it was Williams again that started things up in the third inning with a single through the left side. Junior Erika Finn (New Kensington, Pa.) reached on an error while bunting Williams into scoring position. Freshman Lauren Torgent (Brackenridge, Pa.) drove Williams home with a single to left field. Heidleberg then walked the bases loaded for sophomore Gina Batiz (Vandergrift, Pa.). Batiz drew a walk that sent Finn home and gave the Lions a 4-3 lead. Unfortunately, that is all the scoring New Kensington would see and they eventually surrendered to Heidelberg, 12-4.

Williams finished the day with three hits, two runs batted in, and two runs scored to lead New Kensington.

New Kensington will next face Cincinnati Clermont in its home opener on Saturday, Mar. 17. The doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m.
