Softball Falls Twice on Day Two of D9 Sunkissed Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Penn State New Kensington Softball lost to St. Joseph's College of Maine, 10-0, before falling to Simmons College, 19-0, on Wednesday at the Diamond 9 Sunkissed Games. New Kensington's record moves to 0-4 on the season.

After finding themselves down 9-0 after three innings with St. Joseph's, New Kensington threatened to score in the top of the fourth. Junior Brittney Wolford (Lower Burrell, Pa.) singled to start the inning, and a ground out moved her along to second. Erika Finn (New Kensington, Pa.) single to left,  moving Wolford to third and into scoring position with only one out. However, St. Joseph's was able to secure the final two outs of the inning before Wolford could find her way home. Sophomore Stephanie Schrecengost (Rural Valley, Pa.) also had a hit in the game.

Against Simmons, New Kensington put runners in scoring position in the second inning with Schrecengost striking a base-hit to start things off. Freshman Lauren Torgent (Brackenridge, Pa.) reached on a fielder's choice, and then Schrecengost and Torgent were both moved into scoring position on a ground out. Unfortunately, Simmons was able to get themselves out of the jam and New Kensington was kept of the scoreboard. The Lions once again got into scoring position in the third, thanks to singles by Rebecca Wilhelm (Leechburg, Pa.) and Morgan Williams (East Berlin, Pa.), but were unable to capitalize. Torget also singled in the game.

After a day off, New Kensington will return to the field for their final doubleheader in Florida. They will face Bridgewater College and 9:00 a.m. and then Heidelberg College at 1:30 p.m.
