Penn State New Kensington Softball Drops Two on Day One of Season

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Penn State New Kensington softball team dropped a pair of contests Tuesday at the Diamond 9 Sunkissed Games. The Nittany Lions lost to Defiance College, 10-0, before falling to Emerson College, 8-0.

Against Defiance, freshman Lauren Torgent (Brackenridge, Pa.) struck out two batters in three innings of work. Sophomore Stephanie Schrecengost (Rural Valley, Pa.) connected on her first double of the season, while juniors Rebecca Wilhelm (Leechburg, Pa.) and Alyssa Slancauskas (Lower Burrell, Pa.) also picked up hits. Wilhelm also hustled to one stolen base.

Facing Emerson, the pitching combo of Torgent and Schrecengost had two strikeouts each and gave up only two earned runs total. Wilhelm picked up two more hits on the day, while junior Erika Finn (New Kensington, Pa.) added another base hit.

New Kensington returns to the diamond tomorrow to face St. Joseph's College of Maine at 11:15 a.m. and Simmons College at 1:30 p.m.
