PSU Scranton softball clinches playoff berth for second consecutive year

On Wednesday, April 27 the Penn State Scranton women's softball team traveled to Penn State New Kensington for their last regular season away series. In the curtain raiser the PSWS Lady Lions started slow scoring two runs in the first inning and three in the third.  They erupted in the fifth bringing home six runners and putting the game away in their favor, 11-2.  Sophomore, shortstop Julie Cardillo went 3-3 with an RBI and a run scored and freshman, left fielder Kelly Richter went 3-3 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored. Also contributing to the win was freshman, third baseman Nicole Davitt with three hits, an RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore, pitcher McKenzie Moore tossed a gem only giving up three hits and two runs, striking out four through five innings.

In the nightcap the PSWS Lady Lions broke out early as McKenzie Moore homered on the first pitch of the game over the left field fence to lead off the four run first inning. The ladies added to the lead in the second with five more runs and capped off the series with an 11-3 win in the sixth inning. The Lady Lions were led by McKenzie Moore with a home run, a double, two runs scored and two RBIs and Julie Cardillo added two hits including an RBI double of her own. Senior, first baseman Kaitlin Calogero also added to the effort with three RBIs and a run scored and Nicole Davitt rounded out the win with three hits including a double and three RBIs. McKenzie Moore gave up five hits and three runs in six innings.

With the sweep, the Lady Lions clinched a PSUAC playoff berth for the second consecutive year. PSU Scranton will host PSU Brandywine on Friday at 3 PM and 5 PM in a double header that will determine the final playoff seedings for the post season tournament.
